Horses are sensitive and intelligent creatures and generally love Reiki! Mikao Usui’s original system was all about self-healing which then progressed to help heal others which then progressed to being used to help heal animals.
IS REIKI ENERGY DIFFERENT FOR HORSES?
No. Energy is universal, the same energy which flows in the nourishment of people is the same energy which flows through Earth’s plants and creatures. Only the methods and approaches used to treat your horse are different. If you’ve ever tried to get a horse onto a therapy couch you will know what I mean!
HOW CAN REIKI HELP MY HORSE?
“All horses can benefit from healing energy. Any horse which has been through trauma for example either through injury, accident, illness, bad handling, abuse, neglect etc and no matter how long ago, can benefit, as healing aims to restore balance to the energy field and discharge negative energy. Disturbed energy can lead to disease and disorder and all physical illness will have an emotional element to it. Pain and stress are very upsetting for a horse and lead to, so-called, behavioural problems” -Margrit Coates- World renowned equine communicator and healer
SO WHAT APPROACH DO YOU TAKE?
As with any kind of healing work I do, I work solely on a permission granted basis. This is a lot easier with humans than it is with horses as horses do not communicate in words, they communicate in their own actions/reactions. Gaining your horse’s permission and trust is established within the first session through a gentle introduction. I may use a few “horse whispering” techniques to help establish a bond with your horse. My approach in non-invasive and I will always respect your horse’s personal space and environment. Just by taking a few gentle steps and being present within their environment I will be to ascertain whether your horse will give me permission to carry out treatment.
WHAT IF MY HORSE DOES NOT WANT HEALING?
Then I must respect their decision. They will soon let me know, in their own way, if they are not open to the healing, at least at that point in time. There is however other work I can carry out until they are ready such as sending light energy into their stable, to their tack or even giving Reiki to their feed and medicine (with vet’s permission). Because Reiki is complementary, the energy can help raise the healing vibrations of food and medicine to help facilitate their function for your horse’s own highest well-being.
WHAT IF MY HORSE DOES WANT HEALING?
Great!! A typical equine Reiki session is about an hour. After I’ve met your horse and gained their permission I will cleanse the space with 100% natural white sage. Horses generally love sage and are quite happy to breathe in the healing smoke as it’s so calming and cleansing for them. I may use rattles to help clear out any negative energy in their space. I will then carry out an auric scan to see what I pick up from their energy field before I begin the healing practice. This can be anything between 10-30 minutes, your horse will dictate the length of the healing and I will know when they have had enough. Like with gaining permission, I must respect your horses choice. They will always take what they need. Treatments can be carried out in yard or in a field. Field is best as it allows the horse free flowing choice at all times. If your horse has had enough after about 5-10 minutes of Reiki then I can work on Reiki’ing other aspects of their environment. Your time and money will never be wasted!
IS THE TREATMENT HANDS-ON?
Yes and no. It depends entirely on the horse’s decision at that point in time. Reiki is normally through the medium of touch but it can also be sent at a distance – there are no laws on time and space. If I have a horse’s permission to approach then I will work on the specific chakra points. If I have permission to heal but your horse seems wary of being approached hands-on, I may, at first, send the energy from a short distance away until they are ready for me to approach closer. It’s very much a judgement call.
THE BORING BUT IMPORTANT BIT!
The Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 prohibits anyone, other than a qualified veterinary surgeon from treating animals, including diagnosis of ailments and giving advice on such diagnosis. However, the healing of animals by contact healing, by the laying on of hands or distant healing is legal.
The Protection of Animals Act 1911 requires that if an animal clearly needs treatment from a veterinary surgeon the owner must obtain this. To give emergency First Aid to animals for the purpose of saving life or relieving pain is permissible under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3. Permission can be granted via phone or email from your veterinary practitioner.
